the history of MTV

MTV was launched 1st August 1981, followed by the words spoken by John Lack "ladies and gentlemen rock and roll" Initially, this channel was only available to households in New jersey, and only aired music videos which were provided free by the record companies.
MTV currently has over 22 channels in the UK alone, and over 160 channels world wide including music channels such as MTV, Viva, MTV hits, MTV base and MTV dance. Since the start of MTV in 1981 MTV has expanded dramatically around the world, broadcasting live concerts, music videos, and radio across the world. MTV mainly target men and women between the ages of 18-34, presenting music which reflects the lifestyles of the audience. My offering a multi-platform approach, with a range of different genres of music channels, MTV are able to reach a mass market.

The first ever music video shown on MTV was "video killed the radio star" by The Buggles.

This was then followed by:
number #2 "You Better Run" by Pat Benatar
number #3 "She wont dance with me" by Rod Stewart
number #4 "You better you bet" by The Who
number #5 "Little suzies on the up" by PH.D

With the success of the music channel, MTV began to introduce a multiplatfrom, by introducing reality TV shows in 1980's, aimed at young adults and teenagers. Its popular TV show, the "real world was launched in 1982. With the success of the real world and the Osbournes, MTV went onto produce more programmes, including sweet sixteen, teen mom, which has now lead to further shows such as The Hills, The City, Jersey shore and sixteen and pregnant.
